This is the first book I've read by this author and I immediately had to rate it after I finished! It was such a draw, each time I put it down for the day, I couldn't wait to pick it up again. It was easy to imagine the characters as Budgie, Lily, Nick, Aunt Julie and Kiki were described with traits that remained consistent throughout the book. Budgie wasn't very likeable, but she was magnetic in her calculating behavior. Lily was warm and dependable and she seemed to be eclipsed by Budgie's dazzle, but it was nice to see her find herself and realize her own strength. Especially as she continually allowed Budgie to dominate and manipulate their friendship. The book flowed nicely and there weren't loose ends that left you feeling confused, even though there were a few times I wondered why the characters were so easily able to hurt those they cared about. The story culminated in a hurricane so descriptive I felt my heart rate increase as I flipped the pages! I'll certainly pick up another book by this author and I look forward to enjoying it just as much! I LOVED Beatriz Williams' book "The Secret Life of Violet Grant", so I had very high hopes for this one. The characters in "A Hundred Summers" were not as enjoyable or likeable as "Violet Grant"; therefore, only three stars. The plot is a bit predictable, but that should be expected of a beach read and for me, doesn't necessarily diminish its value; but strong, likeable characters are necessary for me to give a book more than three stars, and I felt myself frustrated with most of the characters in this book - the 'villains' are cruel, as they should be, but the main character was just too weak and gullible for me to be sympathetic - I hate mousy women as leading characters! Ugh. I will try another Williams' book though, as I want to read the one that came after "Violet Grant", which I believe is "Tiny Little Thing". Hopefully, this main character will have the old-fashioned gumption and moxie that Violet (and Vivian) Grant had - those two had moxie!
